Performing Arts Studio Sponsors Memoir Workshop for Older Women
A series of five writing classes designed to help older women document their lives will be offered Mondays in July at the Performing Arts Studio, located in The Norman Depot, 200 South Jones. The classes begin July 2 and are open to women age sixty and over.
"Every woman has a unique story to tell, but it's hard to know where to begin," said class instructor Dana Loy. "Through the Older Women's Legacy Circle, women can capture memories and create a personal history. It gives them a time, a place, and guidance for telling their story. It offers an opportunity to remember, to write, and to share."
Through the OWL-Circle Workshop, participants recall events in their lives, discuss memories with others in the group, and write them down. At the end of the workshop, each participant takes home her collection of autobiographical writings.
"Writings of this type reinforce our sense that our lives matter and that we make a difference in the world," Loy said. "They pass on the story of who we are as individuals, as families, and as communities."
The classes will meet from 1:30 to 4:00 each Monday afternoon July 2 through July 23. The cost for the series is $75. Instructor Dana Loy is an experienced teacher, currently teaching creative writing and Spanish at the University of Oklahoma.
"We hope the workshop will encourage women to develop and explore their personal stories," Loy said. "The act of writing helps us to remember the stories of our lives and our families," she said. "Women are often the family’s story-keepers." Loy said that writing helps women stay healthy, mentally and physically.
