Brandy Zdan, with her affinity for writing mature indie-rock and pop songs with hauntingly gorgeous melodies and edgy arrangements, brings her trio to the Summer Breeze stage on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at 7:30 pm. Bring seating and refreshments to enjoy a free evening of musical entertainment in Norman's Lions Park, Flood and Symmes.
Although emerging for the first time as a solo artist in 2013, Brandy Zdan is anything but a rookie. In 2003 Zdan co-founded Twilight Hotel with Dave Quanbury. Together they recorded 2 JUNO nominated albums (Canada's Grammy equivalent) forging a sound that critics likened to "old leather, worn and soft" and earning them the handle "rulers of their own genre."
In 2011, Zdan was recruited as a formidable multi-instramentalist side woman by Austin-based female super-group The Trishas for her six string, lap steel, and accordion skills. Zdan played with the Trishas at Summer Breeze in 2012. Her solo work in Texas (she was hailed as a “one woman tour de force” for her Lone Hunter EP) as well as her side work with The Trishas, garnered her a 2014 Lone Star Music award.
But the native Canadian, now living in Nashville, considers all the above merely a prelude to her November 2015 released “debut” album, aptly titled Brandy Zdan. “All of that stuff led me to know exactly what I want,” explains Zdan. She calls the results the most focused expression of her musical identity to date. “It’s just completely me. I’ve been shaping this vision of my own personal musical statement now for years, and I think what makes this my real debut is just the fact that I was able to completely fulfill that vision. For me, that’s the greatest success that you can hope for when you make a record.”
"This is very much an indie-rock and pop record,” says Zdan, readily admitting that it’s a far ways from her more traditional Americana roots. Ribboned with wide swaths of warm guitar and chilly blue atmosphere, the album buzzes with static overdrive and a bracingly raw emotional honesty. The eleven originals on the album showcase her strong vocals and guitar, steel and keyboard playing and fit together seamlessly to form a self portrait of an artist in full, confident flight.
