Local favorites the Hosty Duo will perform on Sunday, July 7, at 7:30 pm in Norman’s Lions Park at the corner of Flood and Symmes, as part of the 2013 Summer Breeze free concert series.
The Hosty Duo are Mike Hosty, an outstanding guitarist and songwriter, and Michael Byars, a world-class drummer. Their setup is simple, but their individual talents make this two-piece band sound twice its size. Hosty simultaneously tears through gritty slide leads, blows harmonica and or Kazoo and uses foot pedals to stomp bass lines. And “Tic Tac” Byars puts it all in a rock-solid groove. Their superb style of bluesy roots rock combines with imaginative songs about nights spent in jail or dinosaurs or affairs of the heart to make one of the most entertaining shows anyone could hope to see.
Hosty and Byars have been performing as a duo since 1994, filling local and regional venues with legions of loyal fans. The Duo were voted one of "Oklahoma's Best Bands 2012" by the Oklahoma Gazette and "Best Band 2013" by Slice Magazine. The pair have released six albums, most recently Duo II in 2012. Previous releases include The Mousetrap Sessions, Hosty Duo, Golden Country Hits, Un Hombre Malo, and Volume. Several songs from their CD catalog have been played on KGOU in Norman, KRXO in Oklahoma City, KRSC in Tulsa, and overseas in Macedonia, Spain, Belgium, Brazil and the Netherlands. The Duo has been featured on the Jimmy Kimmel Show during their filming of the Okie Noodling Festival in Pauls Valley. Hosty was also mentioned on the Tonight Show Dumb ad section for his One Man Band Routine with an ad that said, “Mike Hosty Plays with Himself.”
