The guitar duo of Iakovos Kolanian, internationally known Armenian-Greek classical guitarist, and Norman’s own Larry Hammett, a recognized expert in many styles of music including classical and jazz guitar, will perform in The Depot on Sunday afternoon, November 19, 2017, beginning at 2:00 pm. Thanks to a generous grant from the Norman Arts Council for this cultural and educational concert, there is no admission charge, however, reservations are required. Donations will be accepted at the door.
Hammett and Kolanian joined together earlier this year, collaborating in a series of concerts in Greece, Armenia, Serbia, and the U.S. Their diverse program includes music from Spain, Serbia, U.S., and Greece, and touring will continue through 2018 in the U.S. and Canada.
Kolanian ranks among the most prominent artists of his generation. His interpretations, driven by vision and faith, often form a bridge between classical music and the music traditions of the world. He is perhaps best known for his performances and transcriptions of ethnic folk music for the classical guitar. Throughout the years Kolanian has toured in Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America, where he has presented to audiences a large part of the classical guitar repertoire.
He also regularly takes part in international festivals in Vienna, Milan, Athens, Israel, Cyprus and Yerevan by giving individual recitals or acting as soloist with symphonic orchestras and ensembles of Athens State Orchestra, Thessalonica State Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra of Greek Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), Camerata Orchestra of Athens, and the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. He joined the University of Oklahoma faculty in 1991 and currently directs one of the most successful guitar programs in the country.
Mr. Hammett’s recordings and compositions are aired worldwide and he gives over sixty performances annually both as a classical soloist and with his jazz trio. He has performed and/or given master-classes in France, Mexico, Argentina, Greece, Spain, Serbia, and throughout the United States. For more information visit www.larryhammett.com
