Important Announcement

The Depot Gallery and office will be closed until at least the end of May, 2020. We will reassess at that time. Phone messages will be checked regularly and calls returned. We do this out of an abundance of caution and concern for the health of our community.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Jim Cobb PaintingThe Depot Gallery will open “Variations on Themes,” an exhibit of paintings by Dr. Jim Cobb, with a reception from 6 to 9 pm in conjunction with the July 14th, 2017 2nd Friday Art Walk and The Depot's “Back on Track” Celebration. The exhibit, in the newly restored Santa Fe Depot at 200 S. Jones, continues through August 27.

“There are so many subjects from which to choose” Dr. Cobb says. “This is true every day when I arrive at the studio. My aim, as an artist, and for this show at The Depot, is to select a variety of themes to make it interesting and to try to convince the viewer (as well as myself) that I am reasonably capable of painting all of them.”

“The human figure and portraits, as well as still lifes, are all from live models or a composition of flowers, vases, fruit, etc. which are posed to my preference and painted on the site. The dogs -- and I went a little overboard with these canines -- are obviously studio produced from photographic images. Dogs just won't pose unless asleep.” Cobb explains. When it comes to landscapes, he says he makes field sketches and/or takes his own photographs for painting in the studio.

Although he studied extracurricular art in high school, Cobb went on to study medicine in college and became a surgeon, opening his practice in Norman in 1977. The passion for art struck him years later while visiting world-class museums with his wife. He began taking drawing courses, then private oil painting classes. “I was immediately hooked on the process of painting,” says the artist. "From that point forward, he selected instruction from well known artists who were 'working artists'. He chose carefully, with the majority of his instructors coming out of the New York Art Student's League and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Dr. Cobb has taught privately, held class sessions for oil painters, and was an Adjunct Professor of Art at O.U. where he taught drawing which he believes is the basis of good painting. He will offer an oil painting workshop for beginning and intermediate students in his studio on August 9 and 10. Contact The Depot at 405-307-9320 to enroll. Tuition for the workshop is $120.

During his career as a painter, Cobb has had numerous one-man shows and group shows. He currently sells his work in the Reflection Gallery on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He, and wife Dail, divide their time between homes in Norman and Taos, NM.

Gallery exhibits in The Depot Gallery are made possible in part by grants from the Norman Arts Council and the Oklahoma Arts Council and by individual donors.
