An exhibition in The Depot Gallery, 200 S. Jones, will celebrate artist Cletus Smith and the beautiful paintings that result as he finds inspiration in scenes “Where the Roads Lead.” An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on September 9, 2016, from 6 to 9 pm in conjunction with Norman's 2nd Friday Art Walk. A second reception will be held on October 14, from 6 to 9 pm, also in conjunction with 2nd Friday. “Where the Roads Lead” continues through October 31.
Cletus Smith's passion is the landscape. “Nature offers an unlimited choice of colors, shapes, textures and lighting.” he says. “I need to feel something about the subject, a collection of darks and lights, or a special feeling of atmosphere…perhaps even a certain recollection of a time or a particular place.” Smith feels equally comfortable working in watercolor or oil.
A professional artist and educator, Cletus has spent his life in the studio or the classroom surrounded by his paints, brushes, and interesting photos taken where the roads lead him in his travels. A native Oklahoman with an art degree from Oklahoma City University, Cletus taught painting at the University of Central Oklahoma for 18 years. He continues to conduct lecture demonstrations and workshops throughout the southwest and has judged numerous art shows throughout the area.
Smith will present a free lecture demonstration at The Depot on Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 pm. All are welcome. He will teach a watercolor workshop on Wednesday and Thursday, September 28 and 29. For additional workshop information phone 405-307-9320. Workshop tuition is $120. Call or visit The Depot to enroll.
Numerous awards and recognitions have been given to Cletus Smith for his paintings and his work as an instructor. He is represented by galleries in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. His work is included in the State of Oklahoma Art Collection. For additional information visit www.cletussmithartist.com.
