“Oklahoma Colors: Earth Sky and Water” Coming to Depot Gallery
and a Frisillo Mini Landscapes Workshop on May 21 at the Depot
Joey Frisillo will be celebrating Oklahoma and favorite landscape themes in her solo exhibition “Oklahoma Colors: Earth, Sky and Water” in the Depot Gallery, 200 South Jones, Norman. The exhibit will open with a reception from 6 to 9 pm on May 9 in conjunction with the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art. A second reception will be held on June 13, also in conjunction with 2nd Friday. The exhibit continues through June 28.
Oklahoma’s red dirt, golden grasses, “Green Country” and expansive blue skies help determine Frisillo’s palette in her new works. From her studio that overlooks Lake Keystone’s sandy beaches, sandstone cliffs and ancient “Cross Timbers” oak forest, Frisillo studies Oklahoma surroundings. “The longer I live here the more I appreciate it’s beauty.’ she says. “I see the most inspiring sunsets from my own patio.”
Primarily a landscape artist, she works both from life on location and from her own photographic references in her studio. Whether painting sweeping vistas or more intimate subjects, her pastels and oils are enlivened with rich layers of color and texture.
Frisillo has been in numerous juried exhibitions including Gilcrease Museum’s “Collectors Reserve.” Honors include “Best of Show” and an Award of Excellence from Art of the West magazine at the Women Artists of the West 38th Invitational Show in Chicago; “Best of Show” two years in a row in Ozark Pastel Society’s annual competition; and a purchase award at the Pastel National. She recently received the “Allen Award” for best plein air painting through the Women Artists of the West Invitational Show in Estes Park. CO.
Her artistic excellence has been rewarded by achieving signature status in the Pastel Society of America, Women Artists of the West and Ozark Pastel Society and an associate membership in the Oil Painters of America. She has been invited to teach classes at Gilcrease and Philbrook Museums and for other organizations.
Frisillo will be teaching a Mini Landscapes workshop at the Depot on Wednesday, May 21 from 10 am to 4 pm, guiding students to explore compositions, color choices and application techniques through a series of small paintings, each of which can stand alone or be a study for a larger work. Demos will be in pastel and oil, but students may use any 2D medium. Workshop cost is $60 per person with an enrollment limit of twelve. Contact The Depot at 405 307-9320 for enrollment information and a materials list.
Frisillo is represented by Pierson Gallery, Tulsa; Atlas Gallery, Tulsa; and Castle Gallery, Ft. Wayne, IN. Check out Joey’s work at www.joeyfrisillo.com
