John Brandenburg, a longtime Norman artist known for his use of vivid color and organic forms, will share his “Noble Laundry Paintings” in an exhibit at The Depot, 200 South Jones, opening with a reception on Friday, July 10, from 6 to 9 pm.  The exhibit will remain in The Depot Gallery through August 28.

The acrylic paintings on canvas to be featured in the exhibit were created during the hours Brandenburg did laundry in a house he and his artist wife, Janet Massad, own in Noble he says, inspiring the title.

John’s paintings include simplified canvases based on figurative, landscape and geometric forms.  Some of his recent work has involved finger-painting using latex dishwashing gloves -- especially in early stages of the composition, using a palette knife, and sometimes mixing a textured medium with colors.  “I am working in a much larger scale than I felt comfortable with before” he says.  He also does smaller mixed media collages incorporating, or done over studies from life.

Using his first hand understanding of the creative process, having worked in acrylic, collage, charcoal, ink and pastel, and being a poet and playwright as well, Brandenburg has been a successful newspaper visual arts correspondent and theater reviewer for nearly forty years.  He received a Governor’s Arts Award for his journalistic arts writing in 1997.

John has previously shown his art at MAINsite Contemporary Art, the University of Science and Arts in Chickasha, JRB at the Elms in OKC, and in many individual and group shows throughout the region.  One of his paintings is in the State Arts Collection.  It is hoped Oklahoma readers and art enthusiasts will continue enjoying John Brandenburg’s works, both on canvas and in ink, for a long time to come.

Depot Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 2 pm and by appointment.  There is no admission charge. Phone 405 307-9320 for additional information on programs at The Depot.

Galley exhibitions at The Depot are made possible in part by grants from The Oklahoma Arts Council and the Norman Arts Council and by individual donors.
