Carolyn Faseler Featured at Depot Gallery
The abstract paintings of Norman artist Carolyn Faseler will be featured during January and February in the Depot Gallery, 200 South Jones, Norman. An opening reception will be held at the Depot in conjunction with the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on January 13, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. There is no admission charge.
“I love the fast gesture mark.” says Faseler. “It is a kind of spontaneous writing. I strive to make my paintings look effortless, as if they emerged complete from my head in an instant, which they didn’t, of course. I spend long hours taking chances and in the process risk disaster. If strokes turn out to be wrong and indecisive, I get out the gesso and start again. This may take several tries but I keep going until I get the offending section right. Colors and shapes will change many times during a painting session. When everything works well together I know the painting is finished."
“I have chosen to work with basic shapes like the square and circle because these shapes abound in nature and help me to make a positive statement about universal issues. Hopefully working with these shapes has helped me to produce abstractions with meaning.”
As a teenager, Faseler thought she would be a fashion designer or illustrator, but going to Kansas Wesleyan University, where commercial art was not offered but fine art was, changed that. She acquired a teaching degree and a BA in Art and taught for 15 years. She later received a Master of Arts in painting from Fort Hayes Kansas State University and has since studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and taken graduate courses at the University of Oklahoma.
Faseler has participated in numerous solo and group shows in galleries and museums across Texas, Oklahoma, and elsewhere since 1985, winning awards along the way.
Gallery exhibitions at the Performing Arts Studio Depot Gallery are made possible in part by a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. For further information about PAS programs, phone 405-307-9320.
